Diesel Generator

A diesel generator is a device that converts diesel fuel into electrical energy for direct consumption or for battery charging purposes. Other than it's basic fuel the operation is very much like a gas generator . It does have a few differences which can be a deciding factor when looking at generators in general:

* diesel generators are more expensive
* diesel generators generally have a longer service life (if properly maintained)
* diesel generators are usually higher powered than gas generators
* diesel generators usually require less fuel per KWh output (which is why larger generators are almost exclusively diesels)
* diesel generators make a different kind of noise than gas generators (low rumble)
* diesel generators can be harder to start in cold conditions

Of course a diesel generator is hardly a 'renewable energy resource', but to be fair it really doesn't pay to be stuck in the winter in a period of calm winds without sun and no power. Its purpose should be to function as a backup in case of a lack of alternatives.
