conversion machine
A conversion machine is a wind turbine that uses a regular ac motor frame as it's base. The motor is taken apart, the rotor is outfitted with magnets and sometimes (but not always) the windings are changed to make the machine work better at lower rpm.
This is a very effective way of building larger windmills without having to engineer the case or making laminations.
While the principle of conversions has no doubt been 'invented' (if there is such a thing) on this site you'll often see the words 'zubbly conversion' after a Canadian that did an exceptionally good job of converting motors to windmills.
